Late Night Trading in Fremantle

The City of Fremantle is considering changing the late night trading from the current Thursday, to Friday.

The main argunments for and against the move are as follows.

FOR

• There is more activity on Friday nights so businesses will perform better
• Perth CBD made the move successfully a few years ago
• It will differentiate Fremantle from the surrounding suburban shopping malls
• Thursdays is not working, except for a few shops, so we have nothing to lose

AGAINST

• If it does not work it will be difficult to get Thursday night trading back again
• Perth spent hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting the move and it took at least 2 years to catch on
• People come to Fremantle on Friday nights for entertainment, not to shop
• We would do better to try and improve Thursday by for example convincing more shops to stay open than at present
