Fremantle Traffic Bridge Closure - 1 February 2026

The Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close on 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months as major works progress on the Swan River Crossings project. The closure will involve the removal of the existing bridge, installation of the new bridge deck and completion of new road connections, which are significant steps toward a safer, modern river crossing for our City.

To manage traffic and support commuters during this time, the State Government has announced several initiatives, including:

  • Extra train and bus services

  • A free-travel zone along South Terrace

  • Additional parking at Fremantle Station, including free SmartRider commuter parking

  • More transit officers and upgraded smart traffic systems

Fremantle, North Fremantle and East Fremantle will remain open for business and we encourage the community to keep supporting local operators throughout the construction period. Your continued patronage will help local businesses thrive, so make sure to keep visiting, dining, shopping and exploring everything our vibrant precinct has to offer.

To improve safety and accessibility for people walking and cycling, Main Roads has announced that new pedestrian countdown timers are being installed at key intersections along Stirling Highway, including Marmion Street, Tydeman Road and Canning Highway. Additional path improvements include vegetation trimming, sign relocation, improved sightlines near the Canning Highway/East Street bus stop and updated detour maps for safer travel.

Drivers are encouraged to download Main Roads new Live Traffic WA app available on both Android and iOS which provides real-time alerts about congestion, incidents and travel times. The app runs quietly in the background and provides live, audible alerts, so there is no need to enter a destination as part of your commute.

The Fremantle Bridge Alliance community engagement team will continue to host pop-up information sessions around Perth from December 2025 through January 2026. Updated locations and dates are available on the project website.

We encourage you to check the Main Roads project webpage regularly for the latest updates or subscribe to receive project notifications.
