Main Roads have notified the community and businesses of major construction works required at the Canning Highway and Stirling Highway intersection during the Australia Day long weekend, prior to the Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure on 1 February 2026.  

Community members have a rare chance to be among the last to cross the old Fremantle Traffic Bridge when it closes permanently on Sunday 1 February 2026, with up to 80 people invited to take part in a final guided bus ride after the bridge shuts to general traffic.

The Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close on 1st February 2026 for up to 12 months as major works progress on the Swan River Crossings project.
