New Fremantle Traffic Bridge to Open Ahead of Schedule
A major milestone for Fremantle businesses and the wider community is on the horizon, with the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge confirmed to open on 1 November 2026, around three months ahead of schedule.
The Federal and WA Governments have confirmed that the new bridge will open to traffic later on Sunday, 1 November, following a community celebration that will give people the opportunity to walk across the new crossing before it opens to vehicles.
The opening is welcome news for Fremantle businesses, residents, freight operators and visitors who have navigated significant changes to the local road network since the original bridge closed on 1 February 2026.
The new bridge replaces the 1939 Fremantle Traffic Bridge and is designed to provide a safer and more reliable connection across the Swan River. It will feature two traffic lanes in each direction, as well as wider shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
A boost for Fremantle's future
For the local business community, the reopening represents an important step towards restoring a key connection between Fremantle and North Fremantle and improving access to the city, businesses, port and surrounding areas.
The project has progressed significantly faster than originally anticipated. When the old bridge closed, the closure was expected to last for up to 12 months, with the new bridge originally scheduled to open in the first half of 2027. Innovative construction methods and strong collaboration across the project team have enabled the accelerated delivery.
The early opening will also help relieve pressure on surrounding roads and restore an important transport link ahead of the busy summer period.
