Rethink the way you travel from 1 February 2026!
The Fremantle Traffic Bridge will close from 1 February 2026 for up to 12 months to allow major construction works, including removal of the old bridge, installation of a new bridge deck and construction of new connecting roads. The project timeline will be regularly reviewed and expedited where possible.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and consider alternative travel options such as public transport, travelling outside peak hours, carpooling, walking or cycling. Road users are also urged to take extra care around pedestrians and cyclists.
To manage traffic impacts and keep Stirling Highway moving, the State Government has introduced a range of measures, including changes to 20 key intersections, new smart traffic management technology, additional school bus services, increased bus and train services during peak periods, a free public transport zone in Fremantle and extra parking at Fremantle Station for SmartRider users. Pedestrian and cyclist safety upgrades have also been completed at several Stirling Highway intersections.
Variable message boards and signage have been installed across the metropolitan road network and we encourage all road users to download the Live WA Traffic App, which provides live traffic updates and wayfinding information.
Significant intersection changes are now in place at Canning Highway/Stirling Highway in East Fremantle and Stirling Highway/Marmion Street in Fremantle, including restricted turning movements and extended turning lanes. These changes will remain until the new bridge is complete.
Dedicated online information is available for public transport users via the Public Transport Authority and for pedestrians and cyclists through WestCycle.
