Roadworks Update - Fremantle Traffic Bridge
Major construction works will take place at the Canning Highway and Stirling Highway intersection during the Australia Day long weekend, ahead of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge closure on 1 February 2026.
Significant traffic delays are expected and road users are strongly encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes.
Canning Highway will be closed between Preston Point Road and Queen Victoria Street from 9pm Friday 23 January to 6am Tuesday 27 January 2026.
Detours
Westbound Canning Highway into Fremantle: Moss Street / Marmion Street
Eastbound Canning Highway out of Fremantle: Fremantle Traffic Bridge / Stirling Bridge / Marmion Street
Southbound Stirling Highway heading east: Marmion Street
Northbound Stirling Highway heading west: Tydeman Road / Fremantle Traffic Bridge
Access to local homes and businesses will be maintained. Signed detours and traffic management will be in place. Temporary changes will be made to PTA bus routes. Please refer to the Transperth web page at Fremantle Traffic Bridge Closure for the latest information. Access will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists with traffic controllers on site to guide them through the intersection.
From Tuesday 27 January 2026 until re-opening of the bridge, the intersection will operate under a new traffic configuration designed to prioritise Stirling Highway movements and maintain traffic flow during the bridge closure:
Only Transperth buses can travel east and west on Canning Highway. Other vehicles will be detoured away from the area to alternative routes.
The right turn pocket from Canning Highway to Stirling Highway northbound will be extended.
The left turn pocket from Canning Highway to Stirling Highway northbound will have two lanes and signals.
The right turn from Stirling Highway northbound to Canning Highway will be removed.
These changes have been widely advertised since May 2025 and will be operational when works are complete.
